Why Sweet Potato
We are most known for two of our lattes — the Brown Sugar Banana Latte and The Sweet Potato Cream Latte. Both of these lattes bring something to the coffee world that extends beyond coffee; they bring a nostalgic and culturally significant flavor to the drinks we consume on a daily basis.
For Houston, growing up in the south meant everything was made with sweet potatoes, not pumpkin, and this is actually the case for a lot of our regulars as well. Most of us know the taste of candied yams on Thanksgiving or that first bite of sweet potato pie that our mom or granny made on Christmas. It brings us back to that moment of togetherness, of being in the comfort of our family’s home, of being loved.
We might also get this same feeling when we bite into some good banana pudding. These foods hold a story for a lot of us, and even if it’s not the same story they act as a connecting piece for us.
We spend a lot of our daily living, especially in America, at a fast pace. That pace that we generally have in our everyday, productive lives doesn’t normally allow for a break back to our childhood self. This term “returning to child” has gained some traction lately, and for good reason. We believe that returning to our childhood self, that feeling of being free of the ego and expectations of daily life, that contentment, is something that we should feel every day in some capacity — even if it’s only when we are drinking a latte.
People ask us “why sweet potato?” — well the answer is that sweet potato supports our “why”, bringing human connection to the forefront of our lives and reminding ourselves that the world is an endless playground for both cultural collision, and a return to our childhood self.
Happy sipping, and may our lattes bring you comfort and good memories.
